Oregon NOW Focus agenda

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed it's the only thing that ever does."

- Margaret Mead

Feminism - First and foremost NOW is a Feminist organization, taking action to bring women into the mainstream of society...

  • Convene new chapters and revitalize existing chapters.
  • Organize a Young Feminist Conference.
  • Create outreach plan to High School and College Women.
  • Advertise Feminism on billboards.
  • State Fair booth.

Opposing Discrimination - Discrimination hurts everyone because no one can be free while even one individual is enslaved by bigotry and prejudice. Racism, homophobia, ageism, sexism hurts everyone...

  • Work to create non-discrimination statures in all Oregon cities.
  • Coalition-build with other organizations.
  • Oppose Federal questioning and immigrant scapegoating.
  • Support candidates who are supportive of NOW principles.

Choice - NOW has always recognized a woman's right to choose a safe and legal abortion as an option. We also recognize the right of the individual to choose death with dignity...

  • Statewide Roe v. Wade celebration.
  • Create and distribute Pro-Choice Brochure.
  • Death with Dignity Resolution and lobbying.
  • Plan actions in event of a Supreme Court retirement.

Unlocking Opportunities - Women are still earning less than men. There is still a glass ceiling, and women are still the first laid off during times of economic hardships...

  • Business Breakfast to help create a networking of Oregon businesswomen.
  • Equality in the Workplace pledges to promote awareness of wage inequity and glass ceilings and to honor those who are actively working to eliminate them.
  • Resolution to oppose Fast Track and New Task Force on Feminist Trade Policies and Globalization.

Safety - Safety is a key issue for women. Domestic violence, rape and sexual harassment are all issues women contend with on a regular basis...

  • Domestic Violence Coalition work.
  • Join Hate Crimes Task Force to work with law enforcement and educational organizations to stop hate crimes.
  • Lobby to ensure funding to assist women without children to escape domestic violence situations.
  • Activities for Domestic Violence Awareness Month (October).
